私の歌日記 1.25 Tues. 英語の歌シリーズ 4 500 miles by Peter, Paul and Mary

今日は、愛とか恋の歌でなく、wiki によれば、

a lament by a traveler who is far from home,
out of money and too ashamed to return.

という、うら寂しい、多分男の話です。Joni Mitchell はじめ多くの歌手が録音しています。
私がもっとも馴染んでいるのは、Peter, Paul and Mary (PPM)のものです。こちらです。



PPM の最も初期の Original recording です。Maryの哀愁を帯びた lead vocal に Peter ＆ Paul の静かな back chorus が、よけいに哀愁を誘います。
NHK FM から、カセットに録音して、カーステレオで聴きながら、500 miles hundred miles と口ずさんでいましたね。
なぜ、この歌が、日本も含めて世界中でヒットしたか。人間の心にひそむ、孤独感に訴えるのでしょうか。
