学校の先生の社会的地位は。世界各国の比較。
2013 年の World Teachers' Day に際して、Varkey GEMS Foundation (VGF) が、世界２１カ国において、teachers が、社会的にどのようにみられているか、という調査をしました。
今日は、その結果を、紹介します。
まずは、VGF とは、どういう機関か、です。 その HP から、c&p します。

この調査の趣旨について、Survey forward で Sunny Varkey は、次のように述べています。
“If we want future generations to have the right values and the best life chances … we need to recruit the best and brightest teachers into the profession, and look at the ways in which we can retain them,” Sunny Varkey, the chairman of the foundation, writes in the survey forward.

日本は、the fifth least respected です。 Italy と Germany に挟まれているのは、何か意味があるのかな。
The most respected は、China、South Korea が、the fourth most respected になっています。
ここに国ではないので、Taiwan が入っていませんが、多分 the best three に入りますよ。
いくつかの国に付けられた短いコメントを紹介しておきます。
In China, teachers are held in the same esteem as doctors.
In the United States, many respondents said they thought teachers were paid too much.
While German respondents showed moderate levels of respect for secondary school teachers, they did not feel the same way about primary school teachers.
Brazil respondents felt that most students do not respect their teachers, although they trusted teachers to deliver a good education.
While most Israelis reportedly like their education system, they do not trust their teachers to properly deliver it.

4番目の画像では、いくつかの国の、Teachers' social status を他の職業と比較しています。
New Zealand, Spain, Netherlands では、a teacher は、social worker 並み、
China では、先のコメントにもあるように、medical doctor 並み。 ただし pay もそうなのかはわかりません。
France と Turkey では、nurse 並み。
US では、librarian 並み。
日本では、何並みか、この図にはないですが、 PDF でみると、local government manager 並みになっています。 地方公務員の課長クラスでしょうか。 そう言われれば納得ですか。 そうなっているのは、２１カ国中、日本だけです。
ただし、このことは、そう思う人の割合が多い、ということで、実際にそうだ、というわけではなさそうです。
例えば、中国で、先生は、医者並みと思う人が、30% で、一番多い、というだけのことです。 ＰＤＦ にその表があります。小さいですが、一応載せておきます。
今日は、日曜に、昨日の World Teachers' Day を踏まえて、日本における 「学校の先生」 の社会的地位、だけでなく、社会的存在意義など、考えを巡らせたどうでしょうか。
